The Caribbean

Curacao
Curaçao is a tangled plate of spaghetti western tossed down in the Caribbean Sea and garnished with a glob of Willemstad sophisti-sauce. More Caribbean in character than Aruba and more European than Bonaire, Curacao is the cosmopolitan centrer of the Dutch Leewards, and island that appreciates refined music, food and drink. The island's scrubby kunuku (countryside) is strewn with cacti, keening divi-divi trees and lizards looking glibly at diving weirdos with oxygen strapped to their backs. The capital, Willemstad, manages to be both dinky and grand while serving up the food, shopping and slickness of a town much less manageable, and architecturally is the most distinctive city in the Caribbean, it resembles a miniature Amsterdam.
Each of Curaçao's thirty-eight beaches offers something special, and you'll enjoy exploring our coastline trying to decide which is your favorite. Most of the swimming beaches are on the sheltered southwest coast, where the water is calm and crystal-clear. And whether you're looking for an intimate cove, a long strand bustling with activity, or scenic spots surrounded by giant cliffs, you won't be disappointed.

Curaçao’s beaches are exceptionally safe. Shoreside, your only concern is the poisonous yellow and green fruits of the shady manchineel tree, which can cause an allergic reaction in some people if they come into contact with wet skin. Mosquitos and gnats that sometimes come out at dusk can be kept away with a good insect repellent.

At first glimpse, Curaçao seems a rather barren island; certain the scant rainfall limits the types of plants and animals that can survive here. But on closer inspection, you'll be amazed at the variety nature has to offer. What at first seems to be a monotonous desert landscape turns out to be teeming with animals, plants and an ever increasing variety of rare and not so rare birds......

Curaçao is the vacation destination with a difference. The fun shines on 38 beaches dotting the coastline like pearls, waiting for sunbathers, divers, and snorkelers. Nature lovers can climb Mount Christoffel, and explore the “living” Hato Caves. Architecture and history buffs will want to visit our splendid country mansions (landhuizen) and explore historic Willemstad's charming streets and pedestrian malls, home to many of our museums and landmarks. Divers and snorkelers will find an underwater paradise of “Mushroom Forests” and “Car Piles”, and sports lovers can try everything from deep sea fishing to golfing, jogging and tennis. After hours you can dance the night away to the beat of soca, salsa, merengue and rock & roll, or try your luck at a casino.
