Grenada
Grenada is a rolling, mountainous island, covered with fragrant spice trees and rare tropical flowers. Bordered by stunning beaches, and dotted with picturesque towns, this verdant island has long been a major source of nutmeg, cloves, ginger, cinnamon, and cocoa. The seductive drifts through the colourful Saturday markets and Grenada's dense forests. In the interior of this volcanic island are cascading rivers and waterfalls, lush rainforests, and one of the most breathtakingly beautiful mountain lakes imaginable. The capital, St. George's, is widely held to be the loveliest city in the Caribbean. Its horseshoe-shaped harbour is surrounded by a pastel rainbow of dockside warehouses and the red-tiled roofs of traditional shops and homes.
Grenada's physical beauty is complemented by its rich history and vibrant, living cultural heritage. Local festivals, fairs, and markets remain an integral part of life on Grenada. Grenada, a 133 square mile island, lies at the southern end of the windward islands in the Caribbean, just 100 miles north of Venezuala. It's interior is mountainous, the highest peak being over 2,750 feet, there are tropical forests and nature trails, while it's coastline is dotted with 45 white and black sand beaches, mangrove forests and coral reefs. Grenada is known for its spices...nutmeg, cloves, ginger, cinnamon and cocoa...and the scent fills the air at Saturday markets. Sailing is popular in Grenada with its numerous secluded coves and inlets. No island structures are allowed to exceed the height of palm trees so you won't find grand high rise hotels dotting the beaches. These friendly people are proud of their quiet, beautiful island.

BEACHES:

Grand Anse Beach, south of St. George's, is the most well-known of Grenada's beaches because of its 2-mile expanse of powdery white sand. Other great beaches can be found in the L'Anse aux Epines area in the southwest. All beaches in Grenada are public

WATERSPORTS:

A wide range of watersports such as windsurfing, sunfish sailing, jet-skiing, waterskiing and even parasailing can be found at the various beaches.

SNORKELING & SCUBA DIVING:

Dozens of excellent snorkeling and dive locations are rich in marine life and coral formations. There is one long offshore reef along the west coast of the island. You can take a snorkeling excursion by boat or snorkel right off the beach. Many of the dive sites are still unexplored. There is a 600 foot long cruiseliner wreck which went down in 1961 in 100 feet of water off the west coast. Visibility in these clear waters can range up to 200 feet. PADI-certified dive operators can take you to the various snorkeling and dive locations.
BOATING & SAILING:
Grenada is one of the yachting centers of the Caribbean. Regattas are held each year and there are several large marinas to accommodate sailors from all over the world. Yacht charters, with or without crew can be easily arranged for day sails around the coast or week sails to explore the many islands of the Grenadines or the Venezuelan coast.

FISHING:

There is fine deep-sea fishing around Grenada with many gamefish such as marlin, tuna and sailfish. The Spice Island Game Fishing Tournament is an annual event and attracts worldwide attention among sportsfisherman. Half day or full day charters can be found.

TENNIS:

Many of the hotels have tennis courts for guests or you can play at the public courts at Grand Anse.
HIKING:
The lush tropical forest of Grand Etang National Park provides plenty of hiking opportunities. The trails range from easy, around Crater Lake to arduous treks through the mountains and guides are available.

GOLF:

There s a nine-hole course at The Grenada Golf & Country Club.

EXPLORING:

St. George's, the capital, is a picturesque city and has some points of interest, namelyYork House, The Registry and Government House, examples of early Georgian architecture, St. George's Roman Catholic Cathedral, built in 1818 whose tower dominates the city, and the Carenage, a fine, natural harbour filled with every type of boat and ship. The Market Square is host to vendors selling a wide range of goods. It is also the political and social hub of the city and is especially lively Saturday mornings. Fort George, constructed by the French in the early 18th century to protect the harbour is still very intact and has great views. The area of Gouyave Bay is dotted with small, picturesque fishing villages and close by is Dougaldston Spice Estate which is the foremost producer and processor of spices. Tours are provided. Lavera National Park has a bird sanctuary set among the mangroves and a beautiful protected beach. There is dramatic coastal scenery and arawak petroglyphs and ruins. More petroglyphs can be seen at Mt. Rich. River Antoine Run Distillery was established in the mid 1700s and still operates in the same manner. You can take a guided tour to watch the process.

SHOPPING:

Spices, especially nutmeg, are an obvious choice and are a very good buy. Many shops offer them made up into gift baskets. Local handcrafts, batik, coral jewelry, printed textiles, jams, jellies and nutmeg syrup are also fun to take home. There is duty-free shopping in St. George where you can get perfumes, jewelry, crystal, emeralds and liquor.

NIGHTLIFE:

Entertainment centers around resort hotels and several bars which provide various kinds of music...steel bands, calypso, limbo, folk and jazz. There are a few discos for dancing to live music.
