The Comitti Tradition
BCR Yachts are the representative in France for Comitti yachts, an Italian yard building classic all-wooden launches in hand laid mahogany. The Alassio and the Portofino motor-launches are the pride of Comitti. Fortunately for these beauties there are still enough conoisseurs and purists who will only buy the best. | At the height of the Dolce Vita in the 1950’s the boat builder Mario Comitti began building high speed launches on the shores of Lake Como in Italy. From the start his boats combined the craftsmanship, style and engineering genius for which Italy is renowned. The Italian passion for speed was expressed in his boats, which were at the forefront of experimental design. His son Elia raced the boats which acquired fame as he won numerous prizes. The racing forced the designs to develop. There developed a classical design above the water. A flared bow curves sensually back to a “tumble home” stern. This elegance remains with us today. It is the signature from the shores of Como and easily distinguished from the slab transom sterns achieved with marine ply.

| There were some exciting changes happening under the water line. Originally designed as a flat bottom boat, a “V- Shaped” hull was developed giving the boat enhanced performance and providing the ideal wake for water-skiing. Despite the obvious benefits of computer aided design, there is still something special about the human touch which perfects the design. The process of experimentation continues. Today the latest resins are used to bond the triple diagonal hulls, the best computer aided design ensures that the engineering integrity of the hull is beyond doubt. The red oak frames are cut with the precision of a laser by the most modern high-pressure water systems without the scorch marks of laser. The high quality catalytic varnish is applied with the most modern techniques.

| There are new designs on the drawing board for new boats. New engines and propulsion systems are brought onto the market imposing new considerations of weight and balance forcing an evolution in design. Sadly, other boatyards making similar boats have either disappeared or have abandoned the tradition of wood in favour of Fiberglas. Others glue a wooden veneer to the outside of the Fiberglas hull. Then there are those who build the entire topside of marine plywood, which cannot be formed to express the elegance and subtleness of the curve achieved with the triple diagonal system used by Comitti to create the hull.

| Today, Comitti is the only boatyard continuing the tradition of building the classic styled all wooden motor boat. Fortunately, there are still enough connoisseurs and purists who will only buy the best. Each boat leaving the yard is scrupulously inspected by Elia Comitti for its quality.
